I love Melissa & Doug toys because they are educational, innovative and lead-free. However, though this toy is great because of the educational aspect and the magnetics, my son and I were disappointed that the shapes don’t align and fit together properly because they have rounded tips. This makes it hard to make the patterns it comes with. If your child would be frustrated because they want it to fit perfectly, then you might consider their other pattern block sets in the wooden box. They have a Beginner one and another one which has more pieces. These have straight lines because they are not magnetic. Here are the links to these two products.

I just got this for my kids, age 4 and 2, and they love it. It is very helpful that they are magnets, they don’t move around as much so the kids don’t get as frustrated. The carrying case is great to keep everything together. We are also starting to homeschool our 4 year old and this is a great math activity as well.

This is an excellent tool for building an understanding of color, shapes, and patterns. There is so much room for learning by using this toy! And best of all, it’s fun! And, for us moms out there, keeping up with it is a breeze. It comes with it’s own vinyl storage case, and who can beat magnetic pieces that stick to the board to ease your child’s frustrations if the pieces don’t “stay” where they are put. The pictures included are really cute – I especially enjoy the duck pattern – and my daughter loves putting them together. All-in-all a really wonderful (and cheap!) investment for hours and hours of fun, stimulating activity! Kudos yet again, Melissa & Doug, for a really great product.

Our daughter received these blocks when she was 16 mo. old and absolutely loves them! She stacks them, nests them, and builds sloping steps for her cars to run down. I was worried they would be too advanced for her (since the recommended age is 2 yrs) but I think that the 2 yr recommendation is to be able to sort the blocks by animal type, color etc. We gave this set as a gift to a 1 yr old and she loved it too. The blocks are made of lightweight wood, so they can be lifted easily, but are strong enough for climbing, sitting, and and being thrown as the tower gets knocked down. Melissa & Doug make such great products and this is no exception. Tons of fun and best of all, no batteries or electronic sounds required!

We got these for our 18-month-old for Christmas. She loves them…but her 3-year-old sister and 5-year-old brother do to! Every child seems to be able to do something fun with these. Pretty wonderful for a toy that doesn’t need batteries, and takes up so little space when it’s time to put them away. We love these!

The perfect stacking blocks, my 15 month old loves them. I love them because they’re durable and nest inside each other for easy cleanup and storage. With all the toys that light up and make crazy noises this simple toy is a ton of fun and his favorite.

Numbers 10 through 20 are not single pieces – which is different from what’s described above. There are actually 32 individual digits (plus the 5 math signs):

3 pieces of number 0

12 of number 1

3 of number 2

2 of numbers 3-9.

The odd digits are either green or yellow, and even digits are red or blue (Except “1″ pieces which also come in red and blue, apparently to be used for the even teen numbers).

My set seems to have a green 1 that should be yellow to make for a nice color pattern (red, green, blue, yellow) from 0-20. Instead the number 19 has a green 1 and yellow 9.

But it seems somebody thought the color scheme through, so maybe I just got an off set.

We bought these and the wooden letters for our son for xmas at 20 months. He loves them and now knew all his numbers and letters before age two…they continue to hold his interest and he plays with them on the fridge while I cook in the kitchen. Only downfall is he still likes to chew on them now and again and the paper coating is certainly not meant to be sucked on! (our fault, not the company’s!)

It would have been nice to have been informed that these pieces are only a few inches long. I assumed by looking at the photos that these were about twice the size, so I was disappointed. My children only played with them once for a little bit and haven’t touched them ever since.

I bought this for my 2 year old Bob the Builder fan. It is difficult to use the toolbox to hammer into, but if you turn it on it’s side your builder can hammer all day long. It’s a little tight at first, but after you hammer a couple of nails and pull them out it gets easier. I like this toolbox because its a little more difficult for little hands. My son has to really think about hitting the nails and turning the wrench and screwdriver, but he can do it. This set looks real and my son loves that. If he sees his daddy using tools he will go get his tools so he can help. Some kids might get frustrated with it, but I think that it’s teaching fine motor skills.

We love it

My son LOVES most construction toys and barely touches this one. While there are “nails” and “washers and screws”, they are awkward to use on the toolkit – mainly for lack of space. Very cute, though, just not terribly practical.

Besides being one of my son’s favorite toys, I feel great about him playing with it all the time because he is building on his fine motor skills. Also, it is adorable to watch him follow his father around the house when his father fixes things. Cleap up is made easy by the tool box that comes with it – and this toy is holding up unbelivablly well considering how quickly my son’s toys normally break!

I bought this for my 18 month old because she is really into books, puzzles and stacking blocks. She picked up the beading concept right away and was thrilled with this new toy. I think the bright colors and variety of shapes are interesting to little ones and it’s a great activity for teaching hand/eye coordination. The beads can also be used for stacking. We do this activity before naptime or bedtime as a quiet transition. This will be a perfect toy to grow with her as she gets older and starts learning patterns and color families. Another great product from Melissa & Doug.

My 2-year old son was interested in the toy from the moment he saw it. He enjoys stringing the beads and then dragging then around on the string. He can be entertained with it for quite a long time. The colors and shapes are fun and attractive.

The quality of the product leaves something to be desired. After playing with the beads on a hardwood floor for one evening, the paint has begun to rub off the edges of the pieces. The holes in the pieces are not sanded finely enough, so sometimes the string gets snagged when one tries to pull it through. Also, and I don’t know if that is intentional, or if any other similar product does it differently, but the piece of the rope that is covered in plastic is too short: you have to hold the string about 1 inch away from the plastic covered part to fit it into the bead to be able to grab the string on the other end. An adult can do it of course, but it’s hard to do for a 2-yo.

Let me just say- I love the design & colors! My 4 year old has tons of fun creating patterns & making games out of the beads (blocks) & string. However, the paint chips easily, the blocks get dented & the overall quailty is “just okay”. This is not a toy I see lasting through both of my childen (4 years & 4 months). I enjoy HABA’s quailty better when it comes to wooden toys.
