I love Melissa & Doug toys because they are educational, innovative and lead-free. However, though this toy is great because of the educational aspect and the magnetics, my son and I were disappointed that the shapes don’t align and fit together properly because they have rounded tips. This makes it hard to make the patterns it comes with. If your child would be frustrated because they want it to fit perfectly, then you might consider their other pattern block sets in the wooden box. They have a Beginner one and another one which has more pieces. These have straight lines because they are not magnetic. Here are the links to these two products.

I just got this for my kids, age 4 and 2, and they love it. It is very helpful that they are magnets, they don’t move around as much so the kids don’t get as frustrated. The carrying case is great to keep everything together. We are also starting to homeschool our 4 year old and this is a great math activity as well.

This is an excellent tool for building an understanding of color, shapes, and patterns. There is so much room for learning by using this toy! And best of all, it’s fun! And, for us moms out there, keeping up with it is a breeze. It comes with it’s own vinyl storage case, and who can beat magnetic pieces that stick to the board to ease your child’s frustrations if the pieces don’t “stay” where they are put. The pictures included are really cute – I especially enjoy the duck pattern – and my daughter loves putting them together. All-in-all a really wonderful (and cheap!) investment for hours and hours of fun, stimulating activity! Kudos yet again, Melissa & Doug, for a really great product.

We love the size of these little vehicles, but the star in the set, the crane, doesn’t work very well. It seems poorly designed in that the crane doesn’t reach down far enough to actually hook on to any other vehicles or anything at ground level. The pulley mechanism works, but doesn’t have a very long cable/string to move so it really doesn’t do much. This is a big source of ongoing frustration for my almost 3 year old.

The other two vehicles in the set or fine, but he doesn’t play with them very much.

I recommend the other Plan Toys construction set, with the very cool excavator, over this one. The excavator is worth more than the price of the entire set, in our opinion. You can skip this one. Or perhaps you can figure out how to modify the crane with a longer string?

My toddler likes this set a lot. Blocks, people, and small animals get moved around a lot. There is a lot of detail for such a small set. The crane doesn’t have a huge amount of function but I wasn’t really expecting it to at this size. However, it is well balanced and so if you attach something it won’t tip over. My husband wrapped a rubber band around the logs from the PT Logging Truck and the crane holds those easily now. My son was DELIGHTED with this.

We’ve had this toy less than a month. While I like the look and the fact that it’s made of wood, we’ve had two problems. First, the top of the toy – the red ball – does not screw onto the stand. Hence, it’s hard to put aside or away neatly; as soon as it’s disturbed, it easily falls and everything comes undone. With a little training, you get used to always picking it up from the base. The real problem is that the pole that holds the rings and is affixed to the base broke! It is held on by some sort of elastic/string device, and it snapped apart from the base. It’s so inexpensive that it’s not worth the effort to send it back. I may try to screw it together. Most likely, we’ll just a buy a different brand.

I love Plan Toys. They use solid, sturdy wood instead of plastics, and all of their dyes are food-grade so you don’t have to worry about your kid ingesting anything nasty if they chew on their toys.

This stacking ring set is great. Some people have complained that it’s smaller than a lot of the other stacking ring sets out there, but i don’t see that as a bad thing. Infant and toddler hands are pretty small, and these rings seem to fit them pretty well. My son actually refused to play with a stacking ring set at his grandparents’ house because the big, puffy plastic rings were too big for him to hold.

The collapsible base thing is actually a bit silly. All it means is that instead of the column being fixed to the base, it’s tied on with string. If you push it, it flexes a little.

And as for the red ball on top not screwing on, well, i’d like this toy less if it did. My son likes stacking the rings then upending the whole thing, which he wouldn’t be able to do if it screwed on. Also, i doubt he’d be able to get the hang of screwing it on right away, so he wouldn’t be able to put it on at all until he did. Sure, it would make storage a bit easier, but it’s not really that hard to pick the whole thing up by the base instead of by the ball on the top.

I love that the rings actually go in the rainbow order of colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. The colors are vibrant. The pole bends away from the base, so there’s some flexibility. My son loves this toy and has played with it since he was seven months old (minus the pole base). If you have a dog, I would recommend watching them closely around this toy. For some reason, my dog chewed on two of the rings. Maybe because of the vegetable dyes or the rubber tree wood? I still think this is the best stacking ring.

I just rec’d the minis as a gift for 4 y.o. son. He and his 18 month old brother love playing with them. It’s the perfect size. I’ve had this for ~ 1 month. It appears that it will last through all my kids.

Other reviews seem accurate as to quality and fun, so I’ll try to add new info:

Construction is of smooth wood and plastic. The wood pieces snap together with sturdy plastic plugs and grommets permanently set into the wood. All wheels are removable and the rubber “tire” (like a thick rubberband with traction grooves on the inside) comes off too. The axle for the tire is permanently fixed into the wood. The clear roof easily slides in/out without grommets or snapping but will not fall out if turned upside down.

The decals are painted on – not stickers. So they don’t peel off. Great.

The plugs, grommets, axles, tires and roof are all color coded alike. That really helps me put the proper pieces together later. The set also includes 4 spare black tires.

It’s a little difficult to pull the pieces apart sometimes due to the smooth wood, but once my son figured out how to grip it around the axles, he didn’t have a problem. Among other things, it’s fun to flip a piece so the wheels roll on the top of the car (it’s silly) or rotate the roof.

Downsides:

1. The wheels & tires are choke hazards for my 18-mo-old. As expected; the toy is not meant for that age. The 4-yr-old also removes the wheels with his mouth/teeth b/c they snap on tightly. Not all children would do this, but just be aware. I have no problem removing the wheels by hand.

2. The wheels end up all over the toy room if the toddler is around. As I said, the set includes 4 extra wheels.

Overall it’s a great toy for girl or boy age 3-?. I recommend the minis and like that there are 3 to interchange parts and interact in pretend play. This is the quality I want – and would pay for – in all new or classic toys.

My three year old son and I had been “window shopping” these products online for a few months before his birthday. We gave him several full size and several minis so he could change the parts around. And oh has he!

These cars are solid blocks of wood. The plastic seems durable as nothing has been scratched yet. We have rolled them into the island a few times but have decided not to “crash” them as they are just too nice. They are heirloom quality. No one will be handing these down so go buy your own!!!

My husband and I joked about a commercial where the parents put the children to bed as fast as possible, scrambling around so they can get back to playing with the automoblox. We were cleaning up really!

If you aren’t satisfied with these products, nothing will make you happy.

I could go on and on but I think you should just by a few and find out for yourself. One is definately not enough!

But the AUTOMOBLOX people are top-notch in customer service and will reply to you directly if you contact them via their website. (I only wrote to thank them for such amazing vehicles and to inquire as to when the white one and more minis would be available.)

My son already has a bunch of normal-sized Automoblox cars. He plays with them every day even though he is only 20-months old and they are recommended for 3+ year olds. I find Automoblox to be high quality toys.

I purchased four MINI Automoblox cars (red coupe, blue sedan, green pickup, and green SUV) so we can take them for trips for my boy to play. My son loves MINIs too. If he plays with MINIs inside the car, it is challenging to find small wheels after he takes them off and drops them on the floor.

There are two major differences (besides the size) in MINIs compared to the full-size Automoblox that I want to mention:

1. MINIs do not come with driver and passengers

2. All four MINIs use the same type of connectors for the wooden pieces (full-size Automoblox have vehicle specific connectors that can be interchanged and add another level to the puzzle)

It seems that the quality of the MINIs is just slightly below the quality of full-sized Automoblox cars. There are some artifacts from the manufacturing process on wooden bodies of the MINIs. Nevertheless, Automoblox are great fun toys.
